Safety Starts Before the Truck Moves

How APD puts workplace safety into practice every day

At APD, safety is part of the job before the keys are even in the ignition.

In Interior Alaska, a delivery day can come with a lot to think through. Road conditions, weather, equipment, timing, distance, and a few classic Fairbanks surprises all have a way of showing up on the same shift. That’s why APD keeps safety at the forefront of everything we do, drawing on local experience honed over 40 years.

Driver-Led, Road-Tested

APD holds weekly safety meetings led by drivers with firsthand experience in the field. These conversations focus on anything that could affect driver safety, from road closures and construction zones to lessons learned on the job.

That speak-up culture also carries into APD’s Stop Work Authority, which gives team members the ability to pause the work when something does not feel safe. As Brady Borum, Director fo Commercial at APD puts it, “Our Stop Work Authority is a team effort. Everybody has to be a stakeholder in that.”

In other words, safety works best when everyone has a voice and everyone uses it.

Checking the Road Before Taking the Road

A safe delivery starts before the truck ever leaves the yard. APD uses pre-trip assessments to make sure trucks, equipment, and route details are ready for the work ahead, because “we’ll figure it out later” is not part of our vocabulary.

If something pops up, the team can account for it early, adjust as needed, and help make sure drivers are heading out with the right information and equipment for the day.

Training for the Routes That Ask More

Some roads require more than a full tank and a good playlist. APD provides specialized training for challenging areas like the Dalton Highway that call for more than routine experience.

That training helps drivers think several steps ahead, adjust when the road has other plans, and make safety-minded decisions when conditions are less than friendly. It is one more way APD makes sure the people behind the wheel are supported before they take on some of Alaska’s most demanding routes.
