Backpacks, Buses, and Brake Lights: It’s Back-to-School Season in Alaska

We can fuel your tank, but only you can hit the brakes in time. Drive safe, Fairbanks.

At APD, we keep Fairbanks moving, but this time of year? We’d rather you slow down a little.

The back-to-school season is officially here, and that means more kids on crosswalks and more bikes on sidewalks. Whether you’re commuting across town or just popping out for errands, here’s your friendly reminder to drive like a kid’s watching, because they probably are.

School’s In. Time to Chill Behind the Wheel.

Picture this: you're late, and every red light feels like a personal insult. But when school zones come back in full force, it is not the time to channel your inner race car driver.

Our streets are now shared with an abundance of small people in oversized backpacks. Kids can be unpredictable, and here, so can the wildlife. So drop your speed, and keep your eyes peeled!

Yielding to Students Never Goes Out of Style

Sure, summer’s still doing its thing, but school zone rules didn’t take a vacation. When that yellow light’s flashing, it’s your cue to slow your roll. And if you see a school bus extend its stop sign? That’s your official notice to pause completely and park it.

Being a good neighbor means driving like it’s your own kid stepping off that bus. So wait, sip your coffee, and let the wheels on the bus go safely round and round again.

Multitasking Is Not a Driving Skill

You might be able to steer with one hand while balancing a breakfast burrito, but we don’t recommend it. Save the multitasking for dealing with winter tires, PTA meetings, or convincing your kids to wear a coat.

Up here, it takes a village to keep the roads safe. And it starts with keeping your phone down and your headlights on. Your safety, and the safety of our community, depend on it.

Let’s Make It to Fall Without Any “Oops” Moments

We are proud to fuel Fairbanks, and that includes looking out for the next generation of mushers, mechanics, and explorers. So from all of us at APD, thank you for being the kind of neighbor who taps the brakes instead of tapping the horn.

Have a great school year, Fairbanks!
